Prevent Costly Water Damage

Water damage to your home can lead to big expenses and disrupt your life. Use these tips to help you protect your home:

* Once or twice a year, inspect water lines and plumbing valves for loose connections, corrosion, buckling, or cracks. Check for leaks around the base of the toilets. Know where the water shut-off valves are located so you can turn off water to the home in an emergency.

* Check appliances regularly and inspect water supply hoses for wear and tear. Keep water heater maintained every couple of years and check for corrosion.

* Inspect the exterior of your home. Seal cracks in foundation and basement floors. Check for leaks around windows and doors during rains and seal properly. Keep shrubs away from the house as roots can damage in-ground pipes and foundation.

* Have your roof inspected for broken or missing shingles that can lead to leaks. Keep gutters clear of debris, and make sure the gutter downspout extensions direct rainwater away from the home's foundation.
